Book Summary:

By following the stories of nine contemporary Chinese artists, The Phoenix Years shows how China's rise unleashed creativity, thwarted hopes, and sparked tensions between the individual and the state that continue to this day. It relates the heady years of hope and creativity in the 1980s, which ended in the disaster of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Following that tragedy comes China's meteoric economic rise, and the opportunities that emerged alongside the difficult compromises artists and others have to make to be citizens in modern China.Foreign correspondent Madeleine O'Dea has been an eyewitness for over thirty years to the rise of China, the explosion of its contemporary art and cultural scene, and the long, ongoing struggle for free expression. The stories of these artists and their art mirror the history of their country. The Phoenix Years is vital reading for anyone interested in China today.

Book Summary:

This early work by Robert E. Howard was originally published in 1932 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The Phoenix on the Sword' is a story in the Conan series where he foils a plot to overthrow him as King of Aquilonia. Robert Ervin Howard was born in Peaster, Texas in 1906. During his youth, his family moved between a variety of Texan boomtowns, and Howard – a bookish and somewhat introverted child – was steeped in the violent myths and legends of the Old South. At fifteen Howard began to read the pulp magazines of the day, and to write more seriously. The December 1922 issue of his high school newspaper featured two of his stories, 'Golden Hope Christmas' and 'West is West'. In 1924 he sold his first piece – a short caveman tale titled 'Spear and Fang' – for $16 to the not-yet-famous Weird Tales magazine. Howard's most famous character, Conan the Cimmerian, was a barbarian-turned-King during the Hyborian Age, a mythical period of some 12,000 years ago. Conan featured in seventeen Weird Tales stories between 1933 and 1936 which is why Howard is now regarded as having spawned the 'sword and sorcery' genre. The Conan stories have since been adapted many times, most famously in the series of films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Book Summary:

David has no greater wish than to explore the mountains behind his new home in North Carolina and as he does he finds a wonder never dreamed of, the Phoenix. The Phoenix introduces David to an endless list of his friends from mythology and in the process opens David's eyes to the wide world both the unseen world and seen world. In the unseen world David and the Phoenix share many adventures all the while a scientist is trying to capture the Phoenix to prove to the world that the bird is real. The phoenix takes David on "educational field trips" to meet sea monsters, fauns and other creatures. Plus they hatch a hysterical plot to scare off an over eager scientist from the phoenix's trail. David learns some valuable lessons about life, one is that nothing remains the same as one grows up. The other is... well perhaps you should read the book yourself and find your own lessons within the pages. A well written story, "David and the Phoenix" has no particular time setting so that it could very well be placed in current time. It brings back to me memories of times when life was much simpler, more pleasant and without the problems we as adults face. It's a story of childhood and the dreams that children of every age share and which we all to soon leave behind. Of course, there is the traditional fiery death of the phoenix in the story.

Book Summary:

An “insightful cultural history of the mythical, self-immolating bird” from Ancient Egypt to contemporary pop culture by the author of The Book of Gryphons (Library Journal). The phoenix, which rises again and again from its own ashes, has been a symbol of resilience and renewal for thousands of years. But how did this mythical bird come to play a part in cultures around the world and throughout human history? Here, mythologist Joseph Nigg presents a comprehensive biography of this legendary creature. Beginning in ancient Egypt, Nigg’s sweeping narrative discusses the many myths and representations of the phoenix, including legends of the Chinese, where it was considered a sacred creature that presided over China’s destiny; classical Greece and Rome, where it appears in the writings of Herodotus and Ovid; medieval Christianity, in which it came to embody the resurrection; and in Europe during the Renaissance, when it was a popular emblem of royals. Nigg examines the various phoenix traditions, the beliefs and tales associated with them, their symbolic and metaphoric use, and their appearance in religion, bestiaries, and even contemporary popular culture, in which the ageless bird of renewal is employed as a mascot and logo. “An exceptional work of scholarship.”—Publishers Weekly

Book Summary:

There's a sacred and hidden path inside each one of us, a path of mysteries and amazing manifestations, where nothing is impossible, not even our wildest spiritual creations. This is the realm of impossibilities, where imagination is carried away by a spiritual insight, which is here referred as the phoenix. The allegory inside this book takes us to a subconscious realm, that can lead us to the most uplifting and unknown side of ourselves, but also to other realities as well, namely, the ones that are parallel to ours, and also other dimensions and galaxies. It is with this allegory of the phoenix that we understand the role of the dragons and serpents of our planet, and how they interfere in the Tao of our existence. As a dance of forces, vibrations of different natures, these symbols and concepts take us to the deepest truth within, of who we are and how far can we go. This is a book about the adventures of our soul, the journey within that so many Shamans live to explore. It's also about a path that all spiritualists and gurus have experienced, a path that some have called nirvana, enlightenment or awaking, but few have ever had the ability to fully describe in a way that can be perceived by the common mortal. The Native Americans have often told us about the spirit of the eagle that keeps guard over the spiritual world. This eagle, or big bird, is representative of another living force, which is the phoenix, the bird of fire. This is why many mystics of ancient times believed that only fire could take souls to another world. The fire purifies the body, but the most potent fire comes from within, as an energy that we burn with our conscious awareness. This is the fire that Buddhists, Taoists and Hindus persist in awakening from within, commonly using disciplines created specifically for this purpose, such as yoga, chikung and meditation. This fire represents the power of our own spirituality, which most people are unaware to possess. As mortals and genetically manipulated slaves of a few alien species, we've lost the physical capability to ignite it. But the phoenix can help us reach it, through the spiritual nature that is within each one of us. The one who can ride the phoenix, can travel very far, to amazing lands. And these are the ones that often come back, when they choose to, as our prophets and religious leaders. This book describes their journey to Valhalla, Heaven, Paradise, or more simply, the Laboratory of God.

Book Summary:

The Phoenix and the Carpet (1904) is a children’s fantasy novel by English writer Edith Nesbit. The second book in Nesbit’s beloved Psammead Trilogy—which also includes Five Children and It (1902) and The Story of the Amulet (1906)—The Phoenix and the Carpet is a tale of curiosity, adventure, and the power of imagination. Siblings Robert, Anthea, Cyril, Jane, and the Lamb live in London with their parents. As Guy Fawkes Night approaches, they collect a small stockpile of fireworks and, in their excitement, decide to test them out ahead of time. They set off several fireworks in their nursery, accidentally burning the carpet and forcing their parents to replace it. The new rug, purchased secondhand, contains a strange egg which Robert accidentally knocks into the fireplace, hatching a beautiful golden Phoenix. They soon learn that the Phoenix, which is reborn every two thousand years, is capable of fulfilling their wishes, and that the carpet has the power of flight. As the story unfolds, the children embark on increasingly thrilling and dangerous adventures, sometimes requiring the help of their friend the Psammead to make it back home. The Phoenix and the Carpet is a fast-paced, endearing novel, a true work of fantasy from one of history’s finest fabulists. It has been adapted several times for film and television, and remains a popular work for children and adults alike. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Edith Nesbit’s The Phoenix and the Carpet is a classic of English children’s literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book Summary:

Steve Marshall was ready. This time there would be no mistakes – no-one to derail the plan, and no-one to step outside his ideas for the perfect Britain. Anyone standing in the way of progress would be brutally mown down. Infiltrating the British Democratic Party was the ultimate solution to the establishment of a Fascist state – a state controlled by him and him alone. Robert Grafton, the party’s current leader, was going to be the perfect tool in the fulfilment of a dream, and would be just one more stepping stone on a path reaching back as far as the end of the Second World War. Marshall had toiled hard and long at the plan since the debacle of 1992. The Organisation had come within a whisker of success, and but for some strokes of outrageous fortune, MI5 and its head, the imperious George Watkinson, would have been all but consigned to history. This time it would be different. Neal James takes this sequel to ‘A Ticket to Tewkesbury’ into a frighteningly possible future. A future built upon the use of the ballot box to further the aims of a radical political society, and where the lessons of history are all too easily forgotten. Book Summary:

Joaquin Phoenix is one of the most fascinating and controversial actors working in film, and ever since his Oscar-nominated performance as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, is one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. Yet in October 2008, during a press interview to promote the critically acclaimed Two Lovers, Phoenix made a shock announcement that he was to retire from acting and reinvent himself as a bona-fide hip-hop musician. The subsequent 'documentary', I'm Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix, made by his brother in law Casey. In this in-depth biography, Martin Howden traces the rise of this unique actor, from his early career as a child-star, through to his Oscar nominated performance in Walk the Line, and subsequent "reinvention". Drawing upon numerous interviews and press reports, this biography documents Phoenix's life following the release of I'm Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix and examines whether his new career is indeed a genuine reinvention or simply a hoax.
